A RARE DISCOVERY

Bill Rau, chairman and CEO and third generation jeweler of the MS Rau estate, also announced the purchase of the Harry Winston diamond necklace that Aristotle Onasis purchased for his daughter Christina. Born into a world of wealth and style, Christina was known for her extravagant collection of high fashion jewelry, and this necklace was one of her highlights.

Christina’s daughter auctioned off the necklace through Christie’s in 2008 after her mother passed away. “We are always on the lookout for provenance pieces and historical jewelry,” says Rau, who has bought and sold other important and famous pieces. “It was amazing how it came to us. It was from an estate in the northeast – first the family went to their local jewelry to buy it and it was beyond what ‘they could pay. Then we got the call and jumped on it.

He continues: “The pendant is a 38-carat Golconda diamond, which is the purest of all diamonds, possessing a level of clarity, purity and transparency unmatched by any other stone. They are universally recognized as the finest diamonds in the world.

“The central diamond is pear-shaped. It is certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as both D-color and Type IIa,r, making this gem two shades whiter than the whitest D-color diamond. It also boasts VVS1 clarity, which means its remarkable color is virtually free of any imperfections.

The entire necklace was designed by Jacques Timey for Harry Winston and the total weight of the necklace the pendant hangs from is 20.00-25.00 TCW of additional G color and VS clarity diamonds and is platinum and in 18k white gold. It is hallmarked with French hallmarks for platinum and 18-carat white gold and a maker’s mark for Jacques Timey.

Rau adds: “I guess the diamond could have been bigger and Harry Winston had it recut and reshaped. The form is not a modern form but it imbues the stone with extraordinary character, brilliance and personality of enchanting quality.
