New De Beers instrument can check and filter 3,600 diamonds as small as 0.0033 carats per hour

De Beers Group’s Ignite division will launch a new diamond verification instrument in early 2023. The new instrument, part of the AMS range, will enable automated and rapid verification of up to 3,600 diamonds per hour in the range from 0.001 carat to 0.0033 carat (0.6 to 1.0 mm), greatly improving the efficiency of the synthetic volume screening process for diamonds of this size.

The instrument has been in development for 18 months and, thanks to its automated feeding and dispensing feature and very low reference rate, it can also be easily used in-house with no specialist expertise required.

Ignite has taken a collaborative approach that has involved working alongside multiple client companies to ensure the development path is focused on meeting specific client needs for synthetic screening and diamond verification, adding value both operationally and commercially.

We believe this new instrument will play an important role in continuing to enhance our comprehensive suite of industry-leading technologies for screening synthetic or lab-grown diamonds down to the smallest sizes, while enabling diamond companies to easier and faster to ensure product quality. integrity.

“Through this new collaborative approach to development, we have been able to ensure a clear understanding of our customers’ perspectives and ensure that what we offer matches their needs. We’ve found the process to be invaluable to everyone involved over the past year of development, and we invite other companies in the industry to let us know if there are any specific challenges they think a such an approach could pay off.

The De Beers Group has developed screening and verification technology at its Maidenhead Innovation, Science and Technology Center since the early 1990s. To date, a total of 11 diamond screening and verification instruments have been developed by the De Beers Group to accurately screen loose and mounted diamonds in jewellery, now with the ability to quickly and automatically screen and verify the integrity of diamonds down to the smallest melee range. .

The new instrument is expected to go into production with pre-orders in the first quarter of 2023.
