Marla Aaron unveils a new piece with natural pink diamonds
In a unique collaboration, the New York jewelry designer Marla Aaron unveiled exclusively at Only Natural Diamonds the rarest and most precious version of its iconic lock design, featuring natural pink diamonds. Her first lock and indeed her first collection was launched in 2012 when her “combined obsessions with bridges, hardware and jewelry could no longer be ignored”.
The collection began as a single lock, a deceptively complex feat to design in precious metals and gemstones, and has grown into an extensive range, sought after the world over. The lock’s design, combined with other pieces in its collection, offers endless wearing possibilities. Marla’s locks have grown in seemingly limitless versions over the past few years, including multiple sizes and shapes, gem-covered, hand-engraved, and more.
A year in the making, the one-of-a-kind lock is teardrop-shaped, set in platinum and fully covered in ten carats of natural diamond shades ranging from pink to purple. Each natural color diamond has a different cut and shape: cushion, round, marquis, emerald, rose and pear cut. Setting diamonds on a curved surface like this is a unique challenge. Yet it’s much more complex when all the diamonds are of different sizes and shapes, not to mention incredibly valuable.
Each stone had to be scanned in 3D and carefully placed as if assembling a puzzle. As if the lock itself weren’t enough, in typical Marla Aaron fashion, the piece features a cylinder of pink opal and rose gold with the most important of the stones embedded in it. The lock and cylinder are worn on a handmade thirty inch biker chain in half platinum and half rose gold. Like most Marla Aaron pieces, this one can be worn multiple ways, depending on the mood of the owner. Everything is housed in a beautiful custom-made lambskin and pink suede box.
Marla said of the design, “someone could wear it ‘casual’ but just as easily wear it to accept an Oscar – that it was both functional and maximal, it could be understated and over the top. .”
This exceptional piece of jewelry was born from a rare collaboration between a jewelry designer and a retail jewelry store. Columbus, Ohio-based luxury jeweler DC Johnson is a third-generation jewelry retailer that appreciates the beautiful and the rare. Part of DJ Johnson’s passion is “emerging talent redefining tradition”. Their specialty is “jewelry and watches that become part of your story and an expression of who you are…to introduce you to pieces you never knew you couldn’t live without.” Marla Aaron’s unique design aesthetic clearly matches the jewelers’ approach, so much so that owner David Johnson provided Marla with the ten carats of natural pink and purple diamonds used to craft this spectacular piece.
“It was a large parcel of natural pink diamonds in assorted shapes, cut styles, sizes and colors. That’s what intrigued me most about the parcel, but I also knew that this would be a huge challenge to create a unique piece using all the diamonds and best telling their story. When I saw Marla’s stone locks over 4 years ago I became obsessed with the idea of having them made a lock with these diamonds. Marla has outdone herself and the piece is just extraordinary,” said David Johnson.
Marla shared: “When David handed me this bag of stones last year and told me to do what I wanted, I have to admit I knew very quickly what I wanted to do: modern adornment for a woman who would like to wear this piece in her life – formal to casual. Long, short, maybe add other meaningful pieces that may or may not be valuable to someone other than her. Functional, maximum , precious, one of a kind. A modern treasure that will be passed on. A unique opportunity for us for which I am eternally grateful.
Although the exceptional piece is barely finished, it’s probably already sold by DC Johnson to a fan of Marla’s work. Someone who took the opportunity to invest in a one of a kind piece with extreme rarity and everyday wearability.
