Krishniah Chetty Jewelers Group (CKC Group) joins The Sunday Guardian to discuss their exclusive new product. Excerpts from an edited interview:
Q. How does the Rare Scents line of fragrances align with the CKC Group vision?
A. The C. Krishniah Chetty Group was founded in 1869. I am the sixth generation member of a professionally run business. We launched Rare Scents in India in March 2021. Our vision was to create a local luxury niche fragrance. Infused with 24k gold, Rare Scents comes in five exquisite variations. These are Aurum, Adamas, Beryl, Corundum and Platinum. Each is bottled with the finest ingredients, carefully selected from 26 different parts of the globe, and the bottles are made in Paris, ensuring Rare Scents is designed to suit someone as rare as you. We invite you to let yourself be tempted by its smoky, fruity, citrus and spicy notes. A whiff of the exotic awaits – I’m sure once you try them yourself you’ll agree.
Although the Rare Scents team is small, they are dedicated to carrying forward the legacy of the CKC group. What’s really important is the years of experience and the value we bring to the table. Q. Please tell us about the different scents and their notes.
A. We have five unique Eau de Parfums, each with different touch notes to suit every sense of the body.
Adamas is a timeless everyday fragrance with notes of jasmine, saffron, amberwood, ambergris and cedar.
Beryl is a warm fragrance perfect for a chilly evening with notes of bergamot, cassis, pineapple, apple, rose, Moroccan jasmine and musk.
Corundum is a perfect oriental fragrance for the evening with notes of bergamot, mandarin orange, green tea and sandalwood.
Aurum is a fresh and sensual fragrance with notes of peach, jasmine and black vanilla.
Platinum is a light and breezy scent for a hot day with notes of raspberry, orange blossom, oud oil and patchouli.

Q. Why do you think Indian brands have not entered the high-end perfumery field before?
A. With globalization, more and more Indians are becoming perfume enthusiasts. But having a luxury perfumery workshop is not within everyone’s reach, it is quite an expensive affair. It also requires perfumery know-how, creative know-how and much more. You have to learn a complex manufacturing process since each bottle must be an artistic creation with immense attention to detail. Indian brands have not yet entered mainstream perfumery. It’s not that brands don’t try. However, these brands are the brainchild of brand managers, not perfumers.
With Rare Scents, you get a whiff of the exotic as soon as you open our bottles. Whether it’s French Damask rose, Italian iris, Tahitian vanilla or Indian oudh, we source the rarest essences from around the world. The harmonious blend of these superior oils in extreme concentration makes us unrivaled in this space.
We are proud to be part of the whole creative process. One thing that sets us apart from other perfume brands in India is that our perfumes are creations of a trained nose with decades of experience. Fragrances are not only created in the laboratory. Memories of our travels around the world and our wellness experiences are encapsulated in the bottles. We also believe that a long-lasting scent is essential for a good scent, and our fragrances last between six and eight hours.
Q. What is the story behind the name and packaging?
A. Fragrances mean fragrances and the term “Rare Scents” was exactly on point. Each of our ingredients was chosen for a reason, and some of them are very rare and hard to find. We want everyone to feel special when wearing one of the fragrances, so this was the perfect name for the brand.
Even our packaging is special. Our customers don’t just receive a fragrance, they receive an unparalleled seductive experience they’ve never had before. Our fragrances are artistic creations, and the products as a whole stimulate the sense of smell as well as the other senses. The packaging reflects the exceptional quality of the juice it contains. The gold flakes added to the perfume reflect the ambient light and make the bottle a real eye-catcher. Even our gold is as valuable as the other ingredients in a Rare Scents bottle.
Q. Who is your ideal client?
A. Our ideal client is an abundance seeker. A flâneur who lives the life of a jet setter, a bon vivant who is a fine connoisseur of all that is refined. Our fragrances are universally flattering. The range of perfumes covers the entire perfume wheel, so that everyone, regardless of gender and age, can discover their new olfactory signature with us.
Our customers love our offerings and spread the word by talking about the products. Many Rare Scents owners have purchased them in two or three variations. There’s no better feeling when customers become your brand ambassadors. We are also very active on our website and social media to spread the word. Many famous Hollywood and Bollywood actors as well as popular influencers also own our fragrances and it helps spread the word.
Q. Are jewelry and perfumes a good business combination?
A. As I like to say, the C. Krishniah Chetty group sells emotions. Jewelry is our primary area of ​​focus and Rare Scents is the perfect addition to any jewelry purchase. They collectively meet the needs of weddings, gifts for all occasions and above all, they are perfect for self-use.
