Canadian platinum coin with diamonds sold for $1.2 million
The Ultimate, a diamond-encrusted platinum Proof coin weighing more than one kilogram produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, sold at a Heffel fine art auction on May 31 for more than 1, 2 million Canadian dollars. The price, which includes auction house fees, exceeded its estimate of $700,000 to $900,000 Canadian.
The unique $2,500 coin was offered exclusively by Maison Heffel by the RCN and is part of the Opulence series, a collection of what the RCN website describes as “an elite new collection of high-value coins launched in 2022”.
Minted and dated 2021, “The Ultimate” is a platinum piece with 462 hand-set pink diamonds (totaling 6.5 carats), “classified as Fancy Vivid and Fancy Intense” according to the RCM’s website, the Argyle mine now closed in Australia.
The reverse design, by Derek C. Wicks, features an intricate central cherry blossom. It’s filled with what the RCM describes as “an exquisitely clustered bouquet” of tiny cherry blossoms and leaves, “rose gold-plated platinum jewelry fashioned by Beverly Hills Jewellers.” Two branches, also bearing the cherry blossoms, encircle the large central flower.
Pink diamonds are set by hand in the petals of each of the small flowers, those in the center as well as those on the branches, “more than two dozen flowers”, the RCM said, and diamonds also circle the border of the piece . Selective rose gold plating around the edge accentuates the design.
The piece has a diameter of 101.6 millimeters and is 99.95% platinum, with the rest rose gold.
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse with a cherry blossom field design. The edge of the coin is serrated.
The coin’s $1,261,250 price included a 20% purchase fee.
