15 Best Floral Scents of 2022 – WWD

Since the dawn of perfumery, people around the world have longed to smell like a bouquet of freshly picked flowers. And this is no hyperbole: ancient Egyptians valued floral scents more than their actual currency, while communities in the Far East even exploited lavender and evergreen flowers for medicinal and curative purposes.

Fast forward to 2022, and we’re just as obsessed with floral scents as our forebears, and many rank among the best scents for women.

“Floral scents are expansive and a bit abstract, best described in terms of the actual floral material,” says Tanaïs, perfumer and founder of the eponymous botanical fragrance house Tanaïs. “White flowers, such as jasmine, neroli, gardenia and tuberose have a deep narcotic scent. Rose and geranium are lively and full-bodied while lavender or chamomile are more herbaceous.

Similar to vanilla scents, floral scents are as classy as they are diverse. Each truly resembles a unique bouquet, made up of a chorus of supporting notes to enhance and amplify specific olfactory characteristics. The wide selection of floral scents range from the old school feminine notes of daisies and gardenias to the refreshing snap of orange blossom and lemon zest to bold and earthy cedarwood and sandalwood, each creating a scent distinctive.

“I like floral notes that are softened by other notes, like dry woods or sweet citrus,” says Bernardo Möller, founder of House of Bō. “Floral scents that have lots of base notes and layers can make you feel chic and luxurious.”

And today’s master perfumers are leaning into this eclectic world of fragrance accords to launch surprising floral formulations that stray from tradition and even create genderless scents.

Still, Möller believes that all floral scents are for everyone, not just women. “Fragrances, in my humble opinion, have no gender; floral aromas are for anyone looking to feel refined and complimented.

Reflecting this new wave of fragrance variety, fragrances can be worn daily, whether in the form of scented oils that you gently dab onto the skin or lightweight body sprays. You can even purchase fragrance gift sets that offer a range of scented products to mix and match to suit your taste.

Whether you’re looking for something clean and refreshing, sweet and versatile, or bright and fruity, our list of the top 15 floral scents is worth shopping for. And we bet no matter your fragrance style, you’ll find one or two to add to your repertoire.
