10 most expensive perfumes in the world in 2022
A good perfume doesn’t just have a pleasant scent, it can serve as an extension of your personality. Scent is said to be one of our strongest senses, and the right scent can make a bold statement that people are unlikely to soon forget.
With that in mind, here are the most expensive perfumes around the world, designed to create a lasting impression.
JAR Bolt of Lightning – $765 per ounce
JAR is the brainchild of Joseph Arthur Rosenthal, an American jeweler based in Paris whose works have been compared to those of Fabergé. The brand is also known for a unique line of fragrances, the most famous (and expensive) of which is Bolt of Lightning. The fragrance has strong floral overtones with ingredients that include oriental flowers and tuberose. Perhaps its most distinctive feature, consistent with the brand’s history, is a beautiful hand-carved bottle.
Jean Patou’s Joy – 850 USD per ounce
Patou, created by renowned French fashion designer and perfumer Jean Patou, currently falls under Procter and Gamble but is still known for producing fragrances of exceptional quality. With an ingredient list that includes different varieties of roses and 10,000 jasmine flowers, Joy is one of Patou’s earliest works and dates back to 1929. Although decades later, it holds the distinction of being the one of the best in the world.
Caron Pepper – $1,000 per ounce
Parfums Caron is one of the oldest French perfume houses. It was created in 1904 and fifty years later would produce what has become its signature fragrance – Caron Poivre. While Caron bottles were typically designed by the founder’s business partner Ernest Daltroff, Poivre features a stunning bottle made by Baccarat. It has an unmistakable fragrance with dominant spicy notes and is only available in selected stores around the world.
Hermès 24 Faubourg – $1,500 per ounce
The Hermes name conjures up images of sleek leather bags, watches and high-end jewelry, but it also has several renowned fragrances to its name. Fragrances like Hermès 24 Faubourg, named after the address of the brand’s flagship Parisian boutique. Only 1,000 bottles of this ultra-rare fragrance have been released, each made from a beautiful Saint-Louis crystal and bearing fragrant notes such as orange blossom and vanilla.
“Clive Christian No.1 – $2,150 per ounce
One of the greatest designers in the world, Clive Christian is known for his beautiful and very elegant kitchens. That same sense of style apparently translated quite well into the world of fragrances with the release of Clive Christian No.1 in 2001. It comes in two scents, one for men and one for women, and comes in a beautiful crystal handcrafted. 24-carat gold-plated solid silver neck bottle.
Chanel Grand Extract – $4,200 per ounce
Created in 1921 through a collaboration between Coco Chanel and perfumer Ernest Beaux, Chanel Grand Extrait holds a very high pedigree in the world of high-end perfumes. The bottle itself is a masterpiece of design, with a look that seems simple enough at first glance but has many layers of artistic complexity.
Baccarat Sacred Tears of Thebes – $6,800 per ounce
A crystal manufacturer of incredible renown for almost three centuries, Baccarat made its foray into the world of perfume in the 90s. The result was one of the most expensive perfumes in the world, with only three bottles ever released. It’s perhaps no surprise that the bottle is one of this fragrance’s biggest selling points – pyramid-shaped and handcrafted crystal with an amethyst cap.
Clive Christian No. 1 Imperial Majesty – $12,722 per ounce
Clive Christian makes a second appearance on this list as the creator of the third most expensive perfume in the world. The fragrance was designed by renowned British perfumer Roja Dove and features an aromatic floral blend that includes rose oil, jasmine and Tahitian vanilla. The bottle has a design worthy of its name, with an 18 carat gold neck and set with a 5 carat diamond.
DKNY Golden Delicious – $1 million
The most expensive perfume in the world until it was dethroned earlier this year, this special edition of the Golden Delicious range is the only one of its kind ever produced. The perfume was actually designed for a charitable cause, with all proceeds from its sale going to “Action Against Hunger”. The result of more than 1,500 hours of meticulous work by expert jewelers, the bottle contains 2,909 precious stones, including 2,700 white diamonds, 183 yellow sapphires, a Cabochon sapphire from Sri Lanka, a Paraiba turquoise tourmaline from Brazil, plus four diamonds rose cut and fifteen Australian pink diamonds.
Shumukh – $1.29 million
Unveiled in March at the Burj Khalifa’s Armani Ballroom, Shumukh is an amazing combination of ingredients that includes Indian agarwood, sandalwood, musk, Turkish rose and several others that don’t have been publicly disclosed. It was designed by Dubai master perfumer, Asghar Adam Ali. The packaging is a work of art, with a leather display case that stands nearly 2 meters tall and opens to reveal a bottle adorned with UAE heritage symbols. The base includes a trio of golden Arabian thoroughbreds as well as three silver shells each housing a real pearl. There are also three gorgeous roses in rose gold and diamond dust and a mini globe with gold continents. Three marble pillars rise from the base to a golden dome at the top of which sits a gold falcon set with diamonds. Needless to say, there is only one bottle currently in existence, which makes it exceptionally rare and will no doubt only add to its value over time.
